Windows Home vs. Pro: What Is the Actual Difference?

Windows Home versus Pro comparison illustration

Windows Home and Windows Pro use the same core Windows experience. The desktop, apps, Store, File Explorer, gaming, browsing, and everyday performance are essentially the same. Pro adds business, management, encryption, and virtualization features.

This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 Home and Pro editions.

Does This Affect You?

If you are buying a PC or deciding whether to pay for a Pro upgrade, the right question is whether you need one of the specific Pro-only features. For most home users, Windows Home is enough.

What Windows Home Includes

  • The standard Windows interface, Start menu, File Explorer, Microsoft Store, built-in apps, and consumer features.
  • Windows Hello, parental controls, Microsoft account sign-in, Xbox features, and normal Windows Update.
  • Device encryption on supported hardware, which is simpler than BitLocker but still protects data if the PC is lost or stolen.
  • Everything needed for typical browsing, streaming, schoolwork, office work, photos, and general apps.

What Windows Pro Adds

  • BitLocker: Full drive encryption with more management options and external drive support.
  • Remote Desktop host: Other PCs can connect into this PC. Both Home and Pro can connect outward to another Remote Desktop host.
  • Group Policy Editor: Detailed policy management for update, security, and system settings.
  • Windows Sandbox: A disposable isolated Windows environment for testing unfamiliar software.
  • Hyper-V: Built-in virtualization for running other operating systems.
  • Domain join and business management: Support for company networks and more granular update controls.

Check Your Current Edition

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Look under Windows specifications.
  3. Read the Edition line, such as Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro.
  4. If buying a PC, check the product specifications before purchase because edition varies by retailer and model.

Which Should You Choose?

Home Is Enough for Most People

For browsing, email, streaming, school, Microsoft Office, casual gaming, and normal apps, Pro’s extras may never be opened.

Remote Desktop Is a Common Pro Reason

If you want to remotely connect into your home PC using Microsoft Remote Desktop, the PC being controlled needs Pro.

Pro Fits Developers and IT Work

Hyper-V, Sandbox, Group Policy, BitLocker management, and domain join are genuinely useful for developers, testers, and people managing multiple PCs.

You Can Upgrade Later

If a PC has Home and you later need Pro, use Settings > System > Activation to upgrade in place with a Pro license. Your files and apps do not need to be wiped.
