Storage Sense is Windows’ automatic cleanup feature. It can remove temporary files, empty old Recycle Bin items, and optionally clean old Downloads on a schedule so free space does not disappear again right after a manual cleanup.
This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Does This Affect You?
Use Storage Sense if your drive keeps filling with temporary files or Recycle Bin content and you want Windows to maintain basic cleanup automatically. It is safer than random cleanup utilities because it uses Windows’ own storage rules and settings.
Turn On Storage Sense and Choose a Schedule
Set this up once, then Windows runs it according to your choices.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Go to System > Storage.
- Turn Storage Sense on.
- Click Storage Sense to open its configuration page.
- Under Run Storage Sense, choose daily, weekly, monthly, or only during low free disk space.
- Keep temporary-file cleanup enabled so Windows removes app temp files it considers safe to delete.
- Choose how long files should stay in the Recycle Bin before automatic removal, or leave that cleanup off.
- Set Downloads cleanup to a time period only if you are comfortable with unopened old downloads being removed. Leave it at Never if you store important files there.
Run Storage Sense Manually
Manual run uses the same settings you configured, but starts immediately.
- Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense.
- Scroll down and click Run Storage Sense now.
- Wait for the cleanup to finish, then check the Storage page for the updated free-space breakdown.

Storage Sense vs Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup is a manual tool and can reach some deeper system cleanup categories, including previous Windows installation files and update leftovers. Storage Sense is best for ongoing automatic maintenance. Many users keep Storage Sense on and run Disk Cleanup occasionally for deeper one-time cleanup.
It Does Not Delete Your Documents Randomly
Storage Sense focuses on temporary files and the specific Recycle Bin, Downloads, and OneDrive options you choose. It does not scan Desktop, Documents, Pictures, or unrelated folders and remove personal files on its own.
OneDrive Files On-Demand
If OneDrive Files On-Demand is enabled, Storage Sense may offer to make cloud-backed files online-only after they have not been opened for a set time. That frees local disk space while keeping the files available from OneDrive.
Use the Storage Breakdown
Before or after cleanup, the Storage page shows categories such as Apps, Documents, Temporary files, and System. That view is often the quickest way to see what is actually consuming space.
