After connecting a second monitor, Windows needs to know how the displays should work together, where they sit physically, and which screen is primary.
This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 after both monitors are connected and detected.
Does This Affect You?
Most dual-monitor setups should use Extend, then arrange the numbered screens so the mouse moves naturally between them.
Choose Extend, Duplicate, or One Screen
- Right-click the desktop and choose Display settings.
- Scroll to Multiple displays.
- Choose Extend these displays for a larger desktop across both monitors.
- Choose Duplicate for presentations, or show only one display if needed.
- Use Windows key + P anytime for the quick projection menu.
Arrange Monitors and Set the Primary Display
- In Display settings, click Identify to show numbers on the physical monitors.
- Drag the numbered boxes so they match your desk layout.
- Select the monitor you want as the main screen.
- Check Make this my main display.
- Click Apply.
- Move the mouse between screens to confirm the direction feels right.
Fix Resolution, Scaling, or Orientation
- Select the monitor that looks wrong.
- Set Display resolution to the recommended option for that monitor.
- Adjust Scale if text or icons are too small or too large.
- Set Display orientation to Landscape or Portrait to match the physical screen.
- Apply changes and repeat for the other monitor if needed.
