Windows often assigns a generic name like DESKTOP-7X4KP9L. Renaming the PC makes it easier to recognize in file sharing, routers, printers, and Remote Desktop.
This works the same on Windows 10 and Windows 11, whether you use a local or Microsoft account.

Rename the device if you manage several computers, share files on a network, connect remotely, or want a clear name in your router’s device list.
Rename from Settings
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Click Rename this PC.
- Enter a new name using letters, numbers, and hyphens. Avoid spaces and special characters.
- Click Next.
- Restart to apply the change.

- Press the Windows key.
- Type rename this pc.
- Press Enter and use the same rename screen.
What the Rename Changes
Network Identity
The new name appears in local networking, file sharing, Remote Desktop, and many router device lists.
What It Does Not Change
It does not change your Microsoft account name, Windows username, user folder, email address, apps, Bluetooth pairings, or Wi-Fi networks.
Naming Advice
Use short simple names such as Office-PC or Sarah-Laptop. Older printers and network devices can be picky about unusual characters.
