HP desktops can be reset with HP Recovery Manager or with Windows Reset this PC. HP’s tool restores the original HP factory image, while Windows Reset reinstalls Windows without necessarily bringing back every HP extra.
This applies to HP desktop PCs running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Does This Affect You?
Use HP Recovery Manager when you want the original HP drivers and software. Use Windows Reset if you prefer a cleaner Windows reinstall. Back up important files before either option.
Reset with HP Recovery Manager
- Back up documents, photos, and other important files first.
- Open the Start menu, search for Recovery Manager, and open HP Recovery Manager.
- Choose Windows Recovery Environment or System Recovery, depending on the version.
- Choose the backup option if offered, but do not rely on it as your only backup.
- Select System Recovery and confirm.
- Follow the prompts to restore the factory image. The process can take one to three hours.
- When finished, Windows opens the first-time setup screens.
Reset When Windows Will Not Start
- Turn the HP desktop off.
- Turn it on and repeatedly tap F11 before Windows loads.
- If F11 fails, interrupt startup two or three times to reach Choose an option.
- Open Troubleshoot, then choose Recovery Manager or Reset this PC.
- Follow the recovery prompts.
HP Reset Notes
Use Windows Reset for Less HP Software
Open Windows recovery settings and choose Reset this PC if you want a cleaner reinstall. Then install only the HP drivers you need from HP Support.
If Recovery Manager Is Missing
If the recovery partition was removed or the drive was replaced, use HP Cloud Recovery Tool from HP or the Microsoft Store to create a USB recovery drive. It usually requires a 32 GB USB drive.
Windows Activation
HP desktops normally reactivate automatically because the digital license is tied to the hardware. Use Activation troubleshooter if it does not activate after connecting online.

After resetting, download chipset, graphics, and network drivers for the exact HP model from support.hp.com.
