Windows normally remembers only the most recent copied item. Clipboard history changes that by keeping a list you can reopen with Windows key + V and paste from later.
This applies to Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11.
Does This Affect You?
If pressing Windows key + V does nothing, clipboard history is probably off. After it is enabled, Windows starts saving newly copied text and images from that point forward.
Turn On Clipboard History
- Open Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Turn on Clipboard history.
- Press Windows key + V to open the history panel.
- Copy a few items, then choose one from the panel to paste it into the active app.
If Windows Key + V Still Does Not Open
- Confirm Clipboard history is enabled in Settings.
- Close keyboard utilities, remote desktop tools, or apps that may capture Windows key shortcuts.
- If you are inside a virtual machine or remote session, check whether the host is intercepting the shortcut.
- Sign out and back in, or restart, to reset the clipboard service.
Useful Clipboard Options
Pin Items
Open the clipboard panel, hover an item, and pin it so it survives a restart. This is useful for addresses, signatures, or snippets you paste often.
Clear Clipboard History
Use Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear before lending the PC to someone else.
Sync Across Devices
Turn on Sync across devices and sign in with the same Microsoft account on your PCs to copy on one Windows computer and paste on another.
