A bootable Windows 11 USB drive can install Windows, repair a PC that will not start, or run setup on a machine where the normal upgrade path is blocked. You need a working Windows PC and a USB drive of at least 8 GB.
These steps cover Microsoft’s official Media Creation Tool and Rufus for special cases.
Does This Affect You?
Use Microsoft’s tool for supported PCs. Use Rufus only when you specifically need an ISO-based installer or need to bypass hardware checks such as TPM, Secure Boot, or RAM requirements on an unsupported PC.
Use Microsoft Media Creation Tool
- On a working PC, open Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page.
- Under Create Windows 11 Installation Media, download the Media Creation Tool.
- Insert an 8 GB or larger USB drive. Everything on it will be erased.
- Run the tool and accept the license terms.
- Choose Create installation media for another PC.
- Keep the recommended language and edition unless you need different options.
- Select USB flash drive, choose the correct USB drive, and continue.
- Wait while Windows downloads and writes the installer, then click Finish.
Use Rufus for Unsupported Hardware
- Download the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page.
- Download Rufus from
rufus.ie, the official site. - Insert the USB drive and select it under Device.
- Click SELECT and choose the Windows 11 ISO.
- When Rufus offers Windows 11 setup options, choose the extended installation options needed for your hardware, such as bypassing TPM or Secure Boot checks.
- Leave the other settings at their defaults unless you know you need something different.
- Click START, confirm the erase warning, and wait for Rufus to finish.
After Creating the USB
Boot from the USB
Restart with the USB inserted and press the boot menu key, often F12, Esc, F2, Del, or F10. Choose the USB drive from the boot menu.
Check Requirements First
Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check before deciding you need Rufus. Sometimes TPM or Secure Boot is supported but simply disabled in BIOS/UEFI.
ISO vs USB
If Windows already runs and you do not need external media, you can mount the ISO by double-clicking it and run setup from inside Windows.
Reuse the USB Later
After installation or repair, format the USB drive to use it normally again.
