How to Change Your Power Plan on Windows

Windows power plan settings illustration

Windows power plans control the balance between performance, battery life, sleep timing, display behavior, and processor power. Switching plans can make a laptop last longer or let a desktop run more aggressively.

These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Does This Affect You?

Use power mode when you want a quick battery/performance change. Use classic power plan settings when you need detailed control over sleep, display, USB, processor, or hard drive behavior.

Switch Power Mode on Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
  2. Expand Power mode.
  3. Choose Best power efficiency, Balanced, or Best performance.
  4. The change applies immediately.

Switch Power Plans in Control Panel

  1. Search for Power Plan and open Choose a power plan.
  2. Select Balanced, Power saver, or High performance if available.
  3. Click Show additional plans if High performance is hidden.

Customize a Plan

  1. From Choose a power plan, click Change plan settings beside the active plan.
  2. Set display-off and sleep timing for battery and plugged-in use.
  3. Click Change advanced power settings for processor, USB, hard drive, wireless, and sleep details.
  4. Click Apply and OK.

Useful Power Extras

Create a Custom Plan

Click Create a power plan, choose a starting template, name it, and customize the settings for travel, performance, or desk use.

Check Battery Usage

Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage to see which apps are draining power.

Generate a Battery Report

On a laptop, run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt. Windows saves an HTML report showing battery health and capacity history.

Restore Default Plans

Run powercfg -restoredefaultschemes in an administrator Command Prompt to reset built-in power plans.
