Microsoft Store license error illustration

Microsoft Store error 0x803f8001 usually means Windows could not verify the app or game license. The app may be fine; the local license cache, Store sign-in, or system clock is often the issue.

This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 when installing, updating, or opening Store apps and games.

Does This Affect You?

Use these steps when the Store says an app does not have a valid license or fails with 0x803f8001. Start by refreshing the signed-in Microsoft account.

Sign Out and Back In

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Click the profile icon.
  3. Select the signed-in account and choose Sign out.
  4. Sign back in with the account that owns or downloaded the app.
  5. Try the install, update, or launch again.

Reset the Microsoft Store Cache

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type wsreset.exe and press Enter.
  3. Wait while the blank reset window runs. The Store should reopen automatically.
  4. Try the app again.

Check Date, Time, and Time Zone

  1. Right-click the taskbar clock and choose Adjust date and time.
  2. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically.
  3. Confirm the time zone is correct.
  4. Restart and test the Store again.

Multiple Microsoft Accounts

On shared PCs, the app may belong to a different Microsoft account. Check Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts and sign into the Store with the purchasing account.

Family or Organization Restrictions

Microsoft Family Safety or work/school management can block app installs and show a generic license error. Check family settings or ask the administrator.

Reinstall the App

If nothing else works, uninstall the app from Start, restart, then install it fresh from the Microsoft Store to request a new local license token.
