Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

Clear the Update Cache

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, and net stop cryptsvc.
  3. Run ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old.
  4. Run ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old.
  5. Restart the services with net start wuauserv, net start bits, and net start cryptsvc.
  6. Restart and check for updates.

Repair Windows System Files

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run sfc /scannow.
  3. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
  4. Restart and try the update again.

Alternate Routes

Install the KB Manually

Find the update’s KB number in Update history, download it from Microsoft Update Catalog, and run the standalone installer.

Use Windows 11 Installation Assistant

If the error blocks a Windows 11 upgrade, use Microsoft’s Windows 11 Installation Assistant from the official download page.

Free Up Disk Space

A nearly full drive can leave update files incomplete. Check Settings > System > Storage before retrying.
